Tumbleweed Taps Largest Franchisee as President and CEO

LOUISVILLE, KY – Directors of Tumbleweed Restaurants, Inc. today announced the appointment of Matthew T. Higgins as its new President and CEO. Higgins, a 26-year veteran of the Tumbleweed system, replaces Terry Smith who resigned after 7 years in the position.

Higgins, 45, served most recently as President and CEO of TW-Indiana, LLC, the largest franchisee of the 61-unit Tumbleweed Southwest Grill chain.

“Opportunity is ripe for the Tumbleweed brand right now,” Higgins said. “Terry has done a remarkable job of broadening the range of possibilities within the grill portion of our concept. The next goal is to focus equal energy on choices for our guests who prefer the traditional flavors of the Southwest unique to Tumbleweed.”

Smith, 60, guided Tumbleweed through its transition from a publicly-traded company to its return as a privately-held entity in 2003, the establishment of its flagship location as a fixture on Louisvilleʼs downtown waterfront in 2005, and the continued modernization/renovation of its existing locations. He has worked closely with Higgins since coming to Louisville in August of 2000.

“Matt is passionate about the brand and has lived it for nearly his entire career. Our guests will benefit from his years of day-to-day Tumbleweed experience,” Smith said.

In addition to its domestic operations, Tumbleweed, opened its first restaurant in New Albany, Indiana in 1975, operates throughout the European Union and the Middle East. For more information about Tumbleweed, contact Rick Schardein at (502) 589-3567 or by email at rick@currentmarketing.com.
